- Throughout a her 20 year parliamentary career Kate held numerous ministerial portfolios , including as the Federal Minister for Sport, Minister Assisting the Minister for the Digital Economy and Industry and Innovation and Minister for Multicultural Affairs. In the period prior to coming to government Kate had extensive shadow portfolio responsibilities included Sport, Health Promotion, Local Government, Information Technology, Manufacturing and Consumer Affairs.
- Kate left school at the age of 16 to enter the workforce as a labourer in the building and construction industry, and it was this experience that led Kate to develop a concern for workers’ health and safety in the workplace. Motivated by these concerns Kate became an official in the Building Workers Industrial Union, President of the ACT Trades and Labour Council. In 1996, Kate was ACT Labor representative in the Australian Senate.
