Where did the genesis/idea for your business come from?
The idea for GymAware began 15 years ago when looking at the problems coaches had in the weight room to measure athletic performance, and with advancements in technology, GymAware gives coaches the ability to better monitor their athletes during training.
What do you believe sets your business apart from those already in the market?
Our business model focus’ on listening to our customers, implementing feedback and continually adapting our product offering. We remain connected with our coaches and athletes and offer strong customer support regardless of location.
What’s your key demographic?
Elite sporting teams. GymAware has been adopted by Elite teams including the New Zealand All Blacks, Manchester United, Golden State, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers. Armed forces, high performance facilities and Universities across the US, UK, Canada, Scotland, and the Netherlands benefit from GymAware. With our new product FLEX, we are targeting the individual prosumer lifter.
What are people most excited by about your product? What do they like most?
The GymAware system encompasses a broad range of coaching requirements. With features ranging from cluster timers through to a variety of leaderboards and specific velocity based programming, coaches tend to grow with the system. The accurate and validated data means that the system can be used in areas of research as well as day to day coaching.
By far, the best feature of the system is the Lift Intelligence which automatically detects the bar movement meaning that the athlete/coach never have to interact with the system to record a rep.
What have you learnt about yourself building your company?
Surrounding yourself (the business) with passionate people who have a genuine interest in their craft creates room for exciting development. The theory of employing people you would invite home for dinner has worked to keep our company motivated in finding solutions to facilitate excellence in performance.
As a business, what have been some of the biggest challenges have faced to date?
Location has been both helpful and a hinderance. Understanding how other (non-domestic) markets function and the cultural differences within these has proved challenging at times.
Looking ahead to the next 12 months, what milestones do you wish to reach?
For GymAware to be the #1 tool of choice for coaches and individuals wishing to implement Velocity Based Training. As we are in the later stages of launching our new wireless sensor FLEX and an individual App, focus will turn to the launch and promotion.
Anything else you’d like to mention?
We believe that Australian sports technology companies provide some of the best tools for elite coaches and athletes. Geographically we are limited and as a company we wish to support other Australian companies in the space reach their full potential.
