On behalf of the ASTN board we wish to inform you of recent developments regarding the Industry Innovation Precinct bid, the new ASTN-META sports manufacturing partnership and the subsequent launch of this initiative on 2nd July.
Scrapped Industry Innovation Precinct Program dents ASTN plans, but . . . .
As you may be aware, the ASTN led an industry bid in June 2013 to establish a national collaborative hub under the previous Federal Government’s Industry Innovation Precinct Program. In August 2013 sports technologies was announced as one of five ’emerging industries’ that the Federal government selected to support under this Program. It would have seen the implementation of a significant industry development program supported by $6 million of Federal funding over 4 years to be matched by industry contributions. Unfortunately, the Federal Coalition Government recently announced that it has decided to abolish the Program. This is obviously disappointing, particularly in light of the significant industry traction that we have generated since the ASTN was established in April 2012.At the time we saw this as a game-changing opportunity for the industry. A substantial amount of time and effort was invested in preparing, lobbying & following up the progress of the bid over the past 12 months. Given the ASTN’s limited budget and resources – including delays in determining the future of the Program – this has impacted our momentum over the past 6 months.. . . we believe our plans will align well with the Coalition Government™s new direction
Importantly, our bid was very well received by the Department of Industry. This acknowledges the opportunity that Australia has to build a coordinated & globally competitive sports technologies industry. The ASTN believes that this positions us well to re-engage with the Department of Industry upon the imminent release of the Coalition’s new Industry Agenda. We remain confident that our planned industry development program will align with the new direction. Our targeted plan focuses on;
  • uncovering and fostering new innovations
  • building management capabilities of businesses
  • supporting high potential exporters
  • promoting & maximizing industry / research / sport collaboration
New partnership with META (Manufacturing Precinct) provides growth opportunities in sports manufacturing
It is with pleasure that the ASTN announces a formal partnership with META (Manufacturing Precinct) www.meta.org.au. The partnership provides growth opportunities for ASTN™s members involved in sports manufacturing & design – particularly those in sports apparel, footwear, protective wear, equipment, surfaces and wearable technologies and devices.
Under the arrangement the ASTN will facilitate a niche sports technology collaboration hub™ with META. This will provide;
  • free META membership to sports manufacturers and sports manufacturing start-ups
  • funding support for a selected number of high-impact sports manufacturing projects
  • improved collaboration opportunities between Australia™s manufacturers, researchers and the sports industry
  • promotion and profiling opportunities for the ASTN and its sports manufacturing members
  • short-term funding support for the ASTN to facilitate a sports technology collaboration hub
Acknowledging the opportunity to continue to grow the sports manufacturing industry in Australia the sports technology collaboration hub™ is one of only two niche hubs announced by META to date – the other being a Carbon Fibre hub. We thank Albert Goller (Chair of META) and Zoran Angelkovski (CEO of META) for their vision and support in formalising this partnership. We look forward to working with META and their members in continuing to develop the sports manufacturing industry in Australia.
We will be hosting a launch of this partnership on Wednesday 2nd July in Melbourne. We encourage our sports manufacturers and designers (and related researchers)  to participate in the exhibition on the day which will provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase the capabilities of the industry. More details of this opportunity will be released shortly.
With the opportunity to grow a truly great sports tech industry YOUR ASTN MEMBERSHIP is crucial . . .

At this time, it is crucial that the ASTN secures the ongoing commitment of the industry and its vested stakeholders. Therefore, we ask you to either become a member or renew your membership of the ASTN over the coming months. Please expect a call from our team to discuss ASTN and META membership as well as our upcoming initiatives to support the growth of the industry.A coordinated national collaborative hub focused on development of sports technologies industry will benefit all stakeholders – whether you are a start-up, a business, a university or a sporting organization. We are confident that the time, effort and resources invested to date can present game changing opportunities for the industry.

Thank you for ongoing support and interest.

Yours sincerely
