The Gold Coast is a destination for sports innovation, offering close connection to industry collaborators, and brings together like-minded innovators from within sports, as well as other related and influential industries, including academia, health, media and entertainment. The Gold Coast provides a huge opportunity for the entire ecosystem of sportstech, from the developers and innovators of sportstech solutions to end users, including university researchers, athletes, sporting clubs, SSOs, stadiums and facilities.
The ASTN Gold Coast Sportstech Uncovered event that took place on Tuesday 11 June 2024, successfully highlighted the vast potential and diverse applications of sports technology in enhancing performance, increasing accessibility, and driving innovation. The launch of the
Sportstech Gold Coast Growth Plan, in partnership with the City of Gold Coast, marks a significant step towards establishing the region as a premier destination for sports tech. The insights shared by Lydia O’Donnell, Dr David Martin, and Dr Martin Schlegel underscore the importance of collaboration, customer-centric problem-solving, and ethical considerations in developing effective sports tech solutions. As the Growth Plan unfolds, the commitment of ASTN and the City of Gold Coast to fostering sustainable growth and innovation will undoubtedly pave the way for a brighter future in sports technology, benefiting athletes, coaches, and communities alike.

Dr. David T. Martin spent the last 30 years working with Olympic and Professional Coaches and Athletes as an applied sport scientist. Dr. Martin has more than 110 scientific publications investigating topics such as talent identification, demands of competition, fatigue management, competition analysis, altitude training, and thermoregulation. At the Australian Institute of Sport Dr. Martin was a Senior Physiologist, a National Sport Science Coordinator for Cycling, and a Director of Performance for the AIS Combat Center. Dr. Martin was recently the Director for Performance for the Philadelphia 76ers (2015-2019) and is currently a Chief Scientist for Apeiron Life.
Lydia O’Donnell
Co-Founder and CEO, Femmi
Lydia is a New Zealand representative running athlete, winning national titles from the 5000m to the Half Marathon. As an accomplished athlete and running coach, Lydia has been working directly with athletes for over 5 years. She has also held the Nike Head Running Coach position for the Pacific region for the last 8 years.
Lydia is passionate about building supportive, inclusive communities centred around running and movement. She will stop at nothing to help women feel proud and accepting of their bodies.
