Unlocking International Potential for Sportstech

ASTN’s Chair, Dr Martin Schlegel provided an overview of the Australian sportstech sector, the structure of what is considered sportstech in Australia as well as results from the recent ASTN 2023 Sports Innovation Report. Following an introduction by the Israel Trade Commission in Australia and the Israel Export and International Cooperation Institute, Oren Simanian, Founder & CEO of Colosseum introduced the sportstech sector of Israel.

ASTN’s national snapshot provided insights into the more than 750 sportstech companies in Australia, the size of the market and examples of international collaboration as per the ASTN Sportstech Playbook ‘Born Global – Thrive Local’. In addition, the ASTN initiative of creating the Australian Sports Innovation Centre of Excellence (ASICE) funded by the Victorian Government’s Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions (DJSIR) and currently supported by State nodes in Queensland and Western Australia outlined a range of opportunities for international collaboration.

Following the ASTN keynote, representatives of Invest Victoria, Invest NSW and Trade & Invest Queensland outlines incentives for overseas startups, major projects and events which could be of interest to foreign sportstech companies interest in embedding themselves into the mature sports industry in Australia.

Representatives from Swimming Australia, XV Capital and the Sports Entertainment Network’s AFL Report rounded off the discussion in terms of technology adoption in high-performance, median and entertainment as well as the increasing appetite amongst family offices and venture capital to invest in sportstech startups and businesses.
