Open Innovation at ASTN
Having collaborated with Henry Chesbrough on Open Innovation over the past few years through the Australian Sports Innovation Centre of Excellence (ASICE), ASTN’s activities were showcased as part of the 2024 conference. Together with Henry Chesbrough and Krithika Randhawa from The University of Sydney, ASTN’s role as an ‘Innovation Intermediary’ were highlighted with ASTN Chair, Martin Schlegel presenting the case study at the conference.

ASTN Case Study: Bridging the Gaps in Technology Commercialisation
Innovation intermediaries have expanded their roles significantly from traditional knowledge brokers to enablers of technology co-development and innovation ecosystem builders. The enhanced role of these intermediaries in facilitating open innovation (OI), particularly between corporates and startups is illustrated by outlining how ASTN connects sports technology startups with large organisations like sporting clubs, companies, research institutions, and investors, thereby advancing technology commercialisation. Drawing on five cases, the authors uncover the pivotal role of innovation intermediaries in bridging startups with established firms.
The findings reveal four key bridging mechanisms, which include: socio-technical, socio-cognitive, socio-relational, and socio-regulatory – used by intermediaries to create effective OI pathways. These mechanisms facilitate robust collaboration between startups and corporations to significantly boost technology innovation and commercial outcomes. The findings emphasise how innovation intermediaries customise strategies to align startup innovations with corporate goals to enhance commercial success.
